对于做平面运动的物体而言，在某一特定时刻t物体上的一点与旋转中心重合，该点称为旋转瞬心M （或简称为瞬心）。在该时刻无穷小时间内旋转瞬心的运动可代替物体的运动。

旋转瞬心是两个速度矢量垂线的交点，该点在某瞬时速度为0。

在固定参照系中，所有旋转瞬心位置随时间的变化情况可由定瞬轨迹表示（也称为固定瞬心轨迹）。将参照系与物体看作一个整体时，移动瞬心轨迹可表示旋转瞬心，两者都可表示瞬心轨迹。

Das Momentanzentrum M (Geschwindigkeitspol) ist der Punkt, welcher auf einem ebenen bewegten Körper zu einem Zeitpunkt t als Drehpunkt fungiert. Die Bewegung ist in diesem Augenblick durch ein unendlich kleines Moment um das Momentanzentrum ersetzbar.

Den Schnittpunkt der jeweiligen Senkrechten zweier Geschwindigkeitsvektoren liefert das Momentanzentrum. Er befindet sich in dieser infinitesimal kurzen Zeitspanne in Ruhe.

Die grafische Darstellung aller Momentanzentren über die Zeit erfolgt über die Rastpolbahn. Es wird dabei von einem raumfesten Bezugsystem ausgegangen. Im körperfesten Bezugsystem wird dies durch die Gangpolbahn dargestellt. Zusammengefasst heißen sie Polbahnen.

In the case of a body that is in planar motion, the instantaneous centre of Rotation M (or simply instantaneous centre) is the point on that body that is acting as the centre of rotation at a given point in time t. At this specific instant, the movement can be replaced by an infinitesimally small moment around the instantaneous centre of rotation.

The point where the relevant perpendiculars of two Velocity vectors intersect is the instantaneous centre of rotation. During this infinitesimally short moment in time, it is motionless.

When the frame of reference is fixed in space, all the instantaneous centres of rotation over the relevant period of time are depicted by the fixed centrode (also known as the space centrode). When the frame of reference is fixed on the body, a moving centrode (also known as a body centrode) depicts the instantaneous centres of rotation. Both are referred to as centrodes.

En el caso de un cuerpo que está en movimiento planar, el centro de rotación instantáneo M (o simplemente el centro instantáneo) es el punto en el cuerpo que actúa como centro de rotación en un punto determinado en el tiempo t. En este instante específico, el movimiento puede ser reemplazado por un momento infinitesimalmente pequeño alrededor del centro de rotación instantáneo.

El punto donde los perpendiculares relevantes de dos vectores de velocidad se intersectan es el centro de rotación instantáneo. Durante este momento infinitesimalmente pequeño de tiempo, este está inmóvil.

Cuando el marco de referencia se fija en el espacio, todos los centros de rotación instantáneos sobre el periodo relevante son representados por la ruleta (curva polar móvil). Cuando el marco de referencia se fija en el cuerpo, una base (curva polar fija) muestra los centros de rotación instantáneos. Ambos son referenciados como centrodes.
