Adhesive wear

Adhesive wear mainly occurs on the sliding surfaces of bodies and counterbodies (such as Cutting materials) made of similar or identical metallic materials that are moving relative to each other. Very different materials are less affected by adhesive wear.

Inadequate or incorrect lubrication and heated tools often exacerbate adhesive wear. It occurs when the Friction bodies are in close contact (contact pressure). In such cases, permissible shear stresses are exceeded in localised areas and diffusion at the interface results in mass transfer. This in turn leads to microscale weld deposits and micro-welds due to rapid heating and cooling.

Additional abrasion often occurs. Particles that have been sheared off (rubbings) can also lead to cold welding. During this process, the solid bond ruptures in the affected area and particles are torn from the material (including over large areas).

Combining very different materials reduces adhesion. Combinations of bcc (body-centred cubic) and hx (hexagonally) crystallising metals, heterogeneous structures and Material combinations involving Metals and ceramic materials or Plastics are less adhesive.

Desgaste adhesivo
