Non-oxide ceramics

Non-oxide ceramics are technical Ceramics that are classed as inorganic, non-metallic materials. They exhibit covalent bonds, can be conductive (carbides) and non-conductive (nitrides) and usually contain boron, silicon or aluminium.

The following are used:

  • Silicon carbides with a high porosity that, on the one hand, reduce temperature and corrosion-Resistance and, on the other hand, can accommodate lubricants. Silicon carbides are harder and conduct heat better than other ceramics. They are used as abrasive Grinding grains (carborundum), as mechanical seals, rotors in exhaust gas turbines and heat exchangers in corrosive environments.
  • Boron carbides have the highest hardness rating after diamond and boron nitrides and offer the greatest resistance to abrasive wear. They are used for nozzles and dressing machines and for Lapping hard metals.
  • Silicon nitride ceramics exhibit relatively high Toughness and flexural Strength. They are used for Cutting and Milling ceramics, in exhaust gas turbochargers and as protective pipes for thermal elements.
  • Aluminium nitrides have a high heat-conducting capacity and insulation resistance, can be metallised and are suitable for hard soldering. They can also be used as a backing for printed circuit boards.
  • Boron nitrides come in various masses that are used as cutting tools for hardened Steel, plungers for Extrusion dies, sprays for Forming Work and nanopowders. When polymer additives are combined with boron nitrides, they produce good heat conductors with high electrical resistance at very low temperatures.
