Engineered wood

Engineered wood is produced by breaking up and then reforming wood. Binders are incorporated if necessary.

Engineered Wood can have different properties and applications depending on the size and shape of its particles. Generally speaking, the smaller the processed wood particles, the better the homogeneity, insulating properties and surface quality. The Strength normally also decreases along with the particle size, but appropriate binders can be used to restore this.

A distinction is made between the following:

  • Engineered wood made from dimensional timber (solid wood) in the form of strips, boards and panels.
  • Wood-particle materials made from solid wood and sawmill remnants, synthetic-resin glues and additives that are formed by applying pressure and heat. These are the most important wood derivatives.
  • Wood-fibre materials made from sawmill by-products, wood and woody fibres of renewable plants (rape, flax). The wood fibres mat due to their own binding forces, but adhesives can also be used as binders.

The materials can be coated, bonded and varnished and also undergo chemical treatment, for example with preservatives or flame retardants. Engineered wood also includes various composites such as light building board, wood-polymer materials and resin-treated compressed wood.
