Floating seal

Floating seals are used in dynamic applications with translational movements, in particular when high sliding velocities, operating pressures and temperatures combine as is the case with cylinder-piston systems.

Most floating seals are made of metal or Teflon. The benefits of Metals include low Friction and a dimensionally stable sealing gap.

A distinction is made between:

  • Piston rings for sealing pistons in cylinders, which also remove and return oil and conduct heat to the cylinder wall
  • Compression or pressure rings with mainly rectangular cross-sections in grooves close to the piston head, which maintain the contact pressure

The fact that piston rings often cause leakage losses has LED to the development of rings with flat trailing edges that draw back the lubricating oils. The front edge, on the other hand, has a steep slope so as to draw out only a small amount of oil (step Seal piston rings).

Sello flotante
