Eine U-Zelle ist eine besondere Form der Produktionszelle (Produktionsinsel). Sie wird in der Zellenfertigung vor allem bei der One-Piece-Flow-Produktionssteuerung angewendet. In einer U- oder Omega-Zelle sind dabei die Arbeitsplätze für einzelne Fertigungs- oder Montageschritte innerhalb eines bestimmten Fertigungsabschnitts u- oder omegaförmig angeordnet. Voraussetzung für die Zellenfertigung ist ein hoher Standardisierungsgrad der Produktion.

In der Regel wird das Material per Kanban in die Linie eingebracht und vom Mitarbeiter aufgenommen. Der Mitarbeiter bewegt sich dann mit seinem Produkt durch die einzelnen Fertigungs- oder Montageschritte bis zur Fertigstellung. In der Regel schließt sich an den letzten Fertigungsschritt eine Prüfeinheit an.

Um unnötige Wege zu vermeiden, sollen die einzelnen Fertigungsschritte möglichst eng zusammen liegen. Dies ist bei U-Zellen oder Omega-Zellen der Fall. Zudem ermöglicht die Zellenform ein übersichtliches Handling sowie meistens kurze Rüstzeiten.
