Thermoplastic elastomers

Thermoplastic elastomers are polymers that, when at Room temperature, behave in a similar way to classic elastomers. Unlike classic elastomers, however, they exhibit Plastic deformation when exposed to heat.

Pure Elastomers consist of wide-mesh crosslinked three-dimensional network molecules that cannot be separated without destroying the material. By contrast, the elastic molecule chains in thermoplastic elastomers can be mechanically integrated into thermoplastic material.

When exposed to heat and high shear forces, thermoplastic elastomers are therefore suitable for plastic deformation and processing. Afterwards, they need to be cooled down again.

Unlike classic elastomers, thermoplastic elastomers are far less resistant to heat and dynamic forces. However, there is no need for dwell time in the mould to support the crosslinking reaction during production and production residues can be reused.

Examples of thermoplastic elastomers include polyurethane elastomer (TPE-U) and ethylene propylene. These polymers are used in applications such as Cable sheathing, timing belts, Grinding discs, automotive parts such as bumpers and as an alternative to plasticised PVC.
