Corrosion-optimised

It is not possible to completely eliminate the causes of corrosion. Corrosion-optimised Design engineering seeks to minimise Corrosion through appropriate design.

Design is geared towards the anticipated corrosion. Possible options include:

  • Designing smooth surfaces, selecting materials and increasing wall thicknesses so as to counteract regular and largely uniform erosive corrosion (effect of moisture, weak electrolytes, alkalis, acids, oxygen)
  • Designing smooth, crevice-free surfaces, butt welds or fully penetrating fillet welds, sealing and moisture protection to counteract crevice corrosion
  • Designing a low difference in potential between metal components and sealing to counteract the effect of electrolytes and prevent contact corrosion
  • Avoiding alternating stress (thermal, mechanical) and Resonance phenomena, adding notches, burnishing, Enamelling to counteract vibration-induced corrosion

Cost factors mean it is rarely possible or expedient to use corrosion-resistant materials.
