Sacrificial anode

Sacrificial anodes are used for Corrosion protection, especially in the case of Bimetallic corrosion. Like impressed-current electrodes, they are classed as a cathodic protection measure. Sacrificial anodes create an artificial bimetal and are often made of magnesium, tin or aluminium.

The metal used for the anode should be less noble than the metal of the component to be protected. The piece of metal is introduced into the component's reaction environment so as to be electrically conductive. This turns the more noble part (the component to be protected) into the cathode in the reaction environment, thereby protecting it. The sacrificial anode, on the other hand, is destroyed (sacrificed) over time as a result of electrochemical reactions.

Sacrificial anodes are used, for example, on the outer hull of boats and ships and in water heaters.

In the case of impressed-current protection, on the other hand, Iron Plate is used to create impressed-current electrodes, which are connected in such a way that they become the anode when a Direct current is applied, while the item to be protected becomes the cathode. The protection potential needs to be monitored through precise checking of the voltage.

Impressed-current anodes are used to protect underground cables and pipework against corrosion.

Opferanode
