Testing material characteristics

Testing of Material characteristics mostly takes place on samples that are subjected to different loads. A distinction is made between static and dynamic methods.

In the case of static methods, a load can be applied quickly and kept constant or slowly increased up to a maximum value. Static methods include:

  • Tensile, compression and Bending test
  • Creep rupture test
  • Shear and Compression test
  • Hardness test (Brinell, Rockwell or Vickers)

In addition to tensile Strength, tensile tests can also be used to determine elongation at rupture, necking (Reduction of area), Modulus of elasticity and yield point.

In the case of dynamic methods, a periodic load between two limit values or an impact load is applied.

Dynamic methods include:

  • Notched bar impact test
  • Vibration test_x000B_Fatigue test
  • Rotary bending test
  • Shore hardness test (for determining rebound hardness)

A further distinction is made according to the type of load (e.g. tensile, compressive, torsional).
