Wear-optimised

Wear-optimised Design engineering aims to prevent the occurrence of wear, when particles break off due to mechanical or chemical influences on the Material composition of a workpiece. However, it is not always possible to avoid Wear completely.

Wear results from the interaction between functional elements, their properties and in the intermediate layer that is often present (usually lubricant). Design features are just as important as the Lubricant in shaping this interaction.

Design objectives for minimising wear:

  • Tolerable, clearly defined and even load (flexible elastic or self-regulating elements)
  • Movement of contact surfaces that supports the formation and preservation of a lubricant film
  • Stable component geometry that is preserved even on exposure to a range of influences
  • Surfaces with a shape and roughness designed to ensure optimum functionality
  • Materials selected to prevent adhesive and abrasive wear
