Die Schubspannungshypothese dient der Bestimmung der maximalen Tragfähigkeit eines mehrachsig belasteten Bauteiles.

Gemäß der Schubspannungshypothese nach Tresca fließt ein Werkstoff, wenn die größte Schubspannung die Schubfließspannung k erreicht.

Über die Gestaltänderungshypothese hinaus gibt es noch die Normalspannungshypothese für spröde und die Schubspannungshypothese für duktile Werkstoffe.
