Steel

Steel is a metallic Alloy of iron, Carbon and other alloying constituents. It is the most widely used metal material. Unlike cast iron, steels can be formed and have a high Modulus of elasticity. Their Material properties - including those resulting from Heat treatment - are combined to balance Strength (hardness) and formability for all kinds of applications.

Crude steel is obtained from pig Iron or steel scrap, these days mostly in converters or through iron ore Reduction with carbon monoxide.

In the case of oxidation (refining), on the other hand, accompanying elements are slagged or chemically bound. Following Tapping in the ladle, dissolved iron oxide and non-metallic particles solidify to form Casting slag that is removed (ladle metallurgy).

Crude steel is predominantly cast in a continuous process and, to a lesser extent, as ingots for forgings and cast steel.

Iron and carbon remain balanced in the crude steel until state variables are changed or a reaction partner is removed. The resultant reaction is an attempt to regain a balance. In the case of permanent-Mould casting, for example, gas is separated off. The steel boils in the mould and gas bubbles that are created may be trapped during this unkilled steel casting process. In modern processes, bubble formation is usually inhibited by using killed steel casting for carbon-rich steels and cast steel.

Non-metallic substances (phosphides, sulphides and oxides) in the form of slag particles can change the crude steel's (micro)structure and properties. Here are a few examples:

  • Phosphorus steels have a good mould filling capacity.
  • Steel containing sulphur is easy to form between 1,000 and 1,200°C. There is a risk of hot fracture at higher temperatures and of red fracture at lower ones.
  • Sulphide slags ensure high surface qualities.
  • Gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen also have an effect.
  • Manganese and silicon constituents are regularly present and also change the steel properties, depending on the quantities in question.

A distinction is made according to the properties or application of various crude steels that undergo further processing through Cutting, Joining or Forming, for example:

  • Corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant steel
  • Heat-treatable and hardenable ledeburitic tool steel
  • Low-alloyed case-Hardening steel
  • Structural steel
  • Free-cutting steel
  • Spring steel

Stahl

Acero
